Antibody-mediated acquired sideroblastic anemia: response to cytotoxic therapy.
A 5 1/2-yr-old child developed severe anemia with erythroid hypoplasia and 50% ringed sideroblasts in his bone marrow. A serum inhibitor of erythropoiesis was demonstrated, utilizing syngeneic and autologous bone marrow in a plasma-clot culture system. The IgG fraction of the patient's serum effected similar suppression of erythroid colony formation. Prednisone therapy was ineffective, but foll...
متن کاملMucormycosis Associated With Deferoxamine Therapy After allogeneic Bone Marrow Transplantation.
Mucormycosis is an uncommon acute and often fatal opportunistic fungal infection that is classically seen with poorly controlled diabetes mellitus with acidosis, acute leukemia, or other immunosuppressive conditions. A relatively new association of mucormycosis occurring in patients with iron and aluminum excess who receive deferoxamine therapy has been reported with increasing frequency. While...
متن کاملSideroblastic anemia in multiple myeloma: a preleukemic change.
In a 10-yr observation period, 75 patients with multiple myeloma have been studied, and 55 of these were treated daily with low dose melphalan by mouth. Of these, four developed sideroblastic anemia, manifested by anemia, thrombocytopenia, aniso-poikilocytosis, and hypochromic stippled cells in the blood, and ringed sideroblasts in the bone marrow. In two patients, this complication occurred af...
متن کاملSystemic vasculitis complicating infantile autoimmune enteropathy.
An infant with unexplained sideroblastic anaemia and severe protracted diarrhoea due to autoimmune gut disease is reported. Despite treatment with an exclusion diet and immunosuppressive agents she developed a severe systemic vasculitic illness. Intensive treatment with plasmapheresis resulted in resolution of the vasculitic process but the child subsequently died after overwhelming septicaemia.
متن کاملThe response of free erythrocyte protoporphyrin to pyridoxine therapy in a patient with sideroachrestic (sideroblastic) anemia.
By G. R. LEE, G. E. CARTWRIGHT AND M. M. \VINTROBE F’ EILMEYER has applied the term “sideroachrestic anemia” to conditions characterized by the association of hypochromic anemia with excessive iron storage.’ In referring to the same syndrome, Mollin and others2 prefer the designation “sideroblastic anemia,” a term which emphasizes the importance of abnormal iron accumulation in erythrohlasts. C...
